User Information / Operating Instructions:

A strict consideration of following instructions is a condition for
reliability and durability of the tyrewarmers
!

1. The most important in short:

  • Note!: KLS-tyrewarmers are only designed for warming up tyres for racing.
Use is at one's own risk!

  • Warning!: Whilst adding or draining gas to or from the fuel tank, the power supply of the tyrewarmers must be disconnected.

  • Warning!: Never heat tyres without direct supervision! In case of any problem the power supply of the tyrewarmers must be disconnected immediately.

  • Warning!: Do not miss to unplug the tyrewarmer before removing it from the tyre!
Otherwise the tyrewarmer can be damaged finally by overheating!

  • Caution!: Strictly observe the general electric safety rules!

  • Note!: (Only if operated on 230 volts):
For personal electric safety it is highly recommended to use the KLS safety plug or similar equipment for electric safety whilst operating the tyrewarmers.

    • Do not use too long tyrewarmers for smaller sizes of tyres:
tyrewarmers must not overlap more than about 2,5 cm. Otherwise too high temperatures can damage the tyre or tyrewarmer in the overlapping area.

    • Do not expose tyrewarmers to rain or any type of moisture!
To prevent electric shock operate warmers only in dry conditions!

    • If there is a smaller distance of 25 mm (1 inch) to a hot exhaust pipe do not mount rear tyrewarmers if muffler is hot. This can burn the cover of the tyrewarmers.

    • Distance between tyres and mudguards should be about 15 mm minimum! This enables easy to mount the tyrewarmers without risk of damage and will prevent overheating in this area too. Mounted tyrewarmers should not touch any mudguards or other parts of the bike!

    • Do not pull on AC cord! Never open the cover!

    • Do not pull on tyrewarmers whilst removing the tyrewarmers!

    • After heating roll it up immediately in hot condition, but not too tight (hands inside, about 10 cm)!
Do not bend tyrewarmers severely, that can damage the carbon heating filaments!

    • Do not change the position of the thermostat(s) fixed to the cover inside.
This can bypass the thermostat and can result in overheating!
Check sometimes if the fixing of the thermostat to the tyrewarmer is O.K.!

    • Temperatures:
      - Standard temperature: 80°C (175°F);
For GP-3D with temperature selector only:
      - Lower temperature: 60°C (140°F);

    • Heating time: Using standard temperature: 30 (min) - 45 (max) minutes,

2. Warranty, Service

  • GP type: 6 month from delivery.

  • GP-3D type: Full season warranty, but minimum 6 month from delivery!

Warranty is limited to carbon heaters and electrical wiring.
Damage which is caused by improper handling or use of the tyrewarmers is at one's own risk and is not covered by the warranty!

3. User Instructions

  • 3.1 Mounting tyrewarmers

    • Before mounting the tyrewarmers clean tyre from dirt and remove small stones for protection of carbon heaters against damage.

    • Fix the tyrewarmer with the long Velcro at the wheel and mount it by turning the free turnable wheel.

    • Fix the tyrewarmer with the two Velcro's and stretch the strings using the fixing-clips by hanging it into the loops. The loops always should press against the rivets of the tyrewarmer! For this only pull the string from the long side!

  • 3.2 Operating tyrewarmers

    • Operate the tyrewarmers in mounted condition only!

    • Be sure, that nothing is touching the tyrewarmer whilst heating! The tyrewarmer has to be free all around. If heating an unmounted wheel, it is necessary to put the wheel flat on the ground

    • For thermostatic temperature control, the integrated thermostat is already fixed at the best point!

    • A hot tyre surface is no indicator of a sufficiently warmed up tyre!
Only a handwarm rim (about 40°C) at the end of heating indicates the best temperature conditions inside the tyre. This condition can be achieved after about 35 - 45 minutes.
From the end of that heating time the temperature inside the tyre decreases up to 2°C/min!

    • Note!: For the best conditions inside the tyre and in order to bridge over long waiting times before the start of the race, lowest rim temperature has to be at least handwarm.

    • It's very helpful for the driver himself to check the temperature touching the rim "by hand" before racing as this is best indicator of the best temperature condition inside the tyre.

    • For the thermic insulation of the tyre whilst waiting for the start of the race mount the tyrewarmer itself to keep the tyre warm at the starting grid.

    • If it is wet, mount the warmed wheels/tyres before the warm-up lap at the starting position directly.

  • 3.3. Only for "GP-3D" tyrewarmers with temperature selector
    (see additional instructions below!)

    • Caution!: Never operate temperature selector switch while tyrewarmer is heating (red LED is "ON")

    • Switch position "1": Heating temperature of about 60°C (140°F) for rain- and normal or profiled tyres. Also for slicks in case of high air or asphalt temperatures.

    • For a quicker heating up, the switch position "2" can first be used for about
20 minutes. Then switch to position "1", but only when red light is not lighting!

    • Switch position "2": Heating temperature of about 75 - 80°C (175°F) for slicks.

  • 3.4 Removing and storage of the tyrewarmers

    • Caution!: Whilst removing, do not pull on the warmer itself, roll it up immediately in hot condition, but not too tight (do not fold or bend tyrewarmers severely)

    • Store and transport only in this rolled up condition.
If not in use for a longer period of time put the tyrewarmers into airtight bags!

4. For "GP-3D type" only:   User instructions for Temperature Selector:

The temperature selector switch provides a decreased heating temperature for rain tyres and all other soft qualifier tyres. It can also be used since hot air or high track temperatures for heating up the tyres on lower, that means on a more grip and tyre saving temperature level.

Note: High heating temperatures to the tyres for a long period of heating time will harden the rubber and decrease the grip of the tyres.

  • Switch position "2": Standard heating temperature, about 80°C / 175°F

    • Best heating time for this tyre temperature level: about 30 - 35 min.

    • The rim itself will be warmed up after that time to a "handwarm" temperature of about 35°C. That indicates the best temperature conditions for the whole wheel!

  • Switch position "1": Lower temperature level, about 60°C / 140°F

    • If you will start on that level only the heating time for this temperature level is about 60 min!
Note: Temperature of rim needs more time to get as warm as in position "2"!

    • Please attend to our recommendation below!

  • Recommendations for operating the temperature selector switch:

    • If there are hot air or track conditions the use of the lower level heating temperature is recommended. But for a quicker temperature rise it can be necessary to start first with the heating at the selector position "2".

    • If a long continuous heating is necessary and if the rim itself is warm (35°C / 100°F after about
30 - 35 minutes!) the temperature selector should be switched back to the lower temperature level to conserve the heat without hardening the tyres.

    • E.g. if it is necessary to heat more tyres at the same time for backup and for a probable later use the temperature selector can help to reduce the risk of a loss of grip by that procedure:
To achieve a maximum tyre grip start the heating on higher level "2" until the rims have a minimum handwarm temperature. If you are not ready for racing at that time switch back to the lower temperature level "1".

    • From this grip saving level you will need only about 5 - 8 minutes to heat the tyre up to 80°C and you have achieved the maximum grip available on the race track.

    • Caution: To avoid damage of the small temperature selector switch do not operate it whilst the red light is "ON".

    • Before operating the switch unplug the tyrewarmer or wait until the red light is switched to "OFF" by the thermostat.
That indicates, that there is no electric power to the tyrewarmer at the moment!
