2002-RS250
Test by Takao Abe
Keeping the running costs down was the design brief. The RS250 had a major redesign in 2001 after 8 years. This 2002 is in its second year of development, with only minor changes being made. The changes lye beneath the surface of the machine.
These include modifications the crankcases, cylinder, piston ring and reed valve to give better durability. For example where you would change a piston and ring every race now you could stretch that to every two races.
The suspension is like that of OHLINS, with a layered valve system, not the check valve as previously used. The biggest change has been in the suspension, it is very different. The set up was very good almost ‘factory’, for the dry conditions. If it was a wet test I think a fair few changes would need to be made to get the best out of what the bike has to offer.
The brakes feel better with the feeling from the front much improved, maybe a better mate with the suspension.
Unfortunately I cannot comment on the engines performance. The carb setting was very rich, stalling at 9000rpm. This is very disappointing for me. The machine was equipped with the new HRC DataLogger, so they should have been keen to show the kit off by improving the engines performance.
The HRC Datalogger is a good tool to have if the rider and team are computer literate and have the time to analyse the data. This must be considered when thinking of purchasing the HRC DataLogger.
The RS250 ’02 model is an improvement on last years model just with the suspension modifications alone. As for the engine with a combination of a leaner setting and better durability the RS250 is shaping up well.
